Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common HP printer support questions.

Your model number is printed on a label on the front, side, or bottom of the printer. It usually starts with "HP" followed by the series name (e.g., DeskJet, ENVY, LaserJet) and a number. You can also find it in the printer's Settings or Information menu, or by printing a self-test page.
The "Offline" status usually means your computer has lost communication with the printer. Try: (1) Restart both the printer and your computer. (2) Open "Devices and Printers," right-click your HP printer, and select "See what's printing." (3) Click "Printer" in the menu bar and uncheck "Use Printer Offline." (4) Delete any stuck print jobs. If the issue persists, reinstall the printer driver.
Use HP's Wireless Setup Wizard: On your printer's control panel, go to Settings, then Wireless Settings, then Wireless Setup Wizard. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your Wi-Fi network and enter your password. Alternatively, download the HP Smart app on your phone — it can walk you through wireless setup automatically.
Visit hp.com/go/warranty and enter your printer's serial number. Your serial number is on the label on the back or bottom of the printer. You'll see your warranty expiration date and any active support plans or HP Care Pack coverage linked to your device.
Yes, the HP Smart app is completely free. It's available for Windows 10/11, macOS, iOS (iPhone/iPad), and Android. It lets you print, scan, copy, set up your printer, check ink levels, order supplies, and access HP support — all from one app.
HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP ink. Third-party cartridges may cause print quality issues, cartridge-not-recognized errors, or void your warranty. Some newer HP printers with HP+ require genuine HP ink by design. For best results and to protect your warranty, HP recommends using original HP cartridges.
